The ongoing eruption of the volcano has started to cause severe problems: the active lava flow headed towards the north, following an erosion gully, has reached the area of Batubulan village.
It threatens to cut the road and reach the coast where a small fishing harbor is located; as of yesterday evening, its front was only 200 m away from the coast where the ring road is located. Authorities have evacuated a small number (22 according to local news) of villagers whose houses are in the direct path of the lava flow.
An additional risk comes from the potential of the lava flow to generate pyroclastic flows - hot, deadly avalanches of ash and rock debris, when parts of the flow emplaced on the steep flank collapse.
The eruption has been going on at mild to moderate levels since late November 2018, the peculiarity of it being that it's coming from the normally less active northern summit crater (most recent eruptions of the volcano were from the southern crater and affected mainly the southern and eastern sectors of the volcano). Slowly but steadily, the erupted lava was advancing as a narrow lava flow that has now traveled more than 3000 m from the summit. Its front is approx. 100 m wide, judging from satellite imagery. Dense vegetation cover, the risk of sudden steam explosions (when hot lava covers wet ground/vegetation, as well as risk of hot avalanches) make it very hazardous to observed it from close. Combined with the remoteness of the small island, its relatively thin population make it difficult to get precise news about the events.
