Kikai volcano (Ryukyu Islands, Japan): possible activity, first since Nov 2019

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded the volcano's first eruption during the past five months, after its last eruption in November 2019.

On 28 April at 21:10 local time an explosion generated an ash plume, which reached approx. 6,000 ft (1,828 m) altitude.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 1 km distance from the main crater.

New activity seems to have started from Satsuma-Iwo-jima (Kikai) volcano. A steam / gas and possibly ash-containing plume has been observed on satellite images and a thermal anomaly was visible on recent MODIS satellite data. On yesterday morning's NASA Aqua satellite image, the plume from the volcano was about 70 km long to the SW. A thermal anomaly was visible already on images from 23 May. lire toutes

Kikai volcano (Ryukyu Islands, Japan) activity update: steaming at summit crater of Iodake, occasional weak glows
Plume activity at the Iodake summit crater has remained at relatively low levels since the middle of 2009, and white plumes rose to a heights of up to 400 m above the crater rim during the reporting period. Weak volcanic glows were recorded at night with a high-sensitivity camera on November 6th and 22nd to 24th. ... lire toutes
