Current earthquakes (red and orange=past 48 hours, yellow=past week) near the summit of Kilauea volcano
Earthquake activity in or near the upper eastern rift zone has been increasing. A magnitude 3 quake occurred in the northern part of the caldera today.
A second DI deflation started at midnight (27-28 Oct) while the Halema'uma'u lava lake level fluctuated.
At Pu`u `O`o, short lava flows issued from the NE pit and south sources; the lava lake in the NE pit remained active with spattering visible from the sources along the north and south crater floor edges.
Lava flows southeast of Pu`u `O`o continued to be weakly active on the coastal plain. Seismic tremor levels were low, and gas emissions were elevated. (HVO)

Within the past few days, Kīlauea volcano's summit lava lake within Halema‘uma‘u crater has risen to a record level within this eruption. To put things in perspective, 1 year ago the lake was 70m/230ft deep, 1 month ago it was 60m/200ft deep, 1 week ago it was 50m/165ft deep, and today it sits only 33m/110ft deep! [details]

Over the past month, lava flows have advanced to become accessible and continue to pool near the base of the pali on Kīlauea's coastal plain, while at the same time a faster rise in pressure is being expressed from the summit to the East Rift Zone, with a remarkable 8mm widening of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō crater since the beginning of October!
