The volcano remains restless and produces intermittent explosions every few days or so from its new crater. These are likely caused by overheated water in the upper conduit flashing to steam, although no precise information is available.
When new magma will appear on the surface and start a more continuous eruptive phase is speculation, but a likely scenario for a not-too-distant future (months?). Thermal signals and seismic activity have been slowly picking up again during the past weeks, suggesting that magma might be rising from underneath.
During our recent (and still ongoing) tour to Krakatau, expedition leader Galih took the following video illustrating the dramatic changes that the volcano underwent following the cone collapse in Dec last year. The island is now a barren ash desert, a low cone of crescent shape around the flat water-filled crater lake to the west.
Any new activity will start with phreatomagmatic (water-magma interaction) explosions.
