Kusatsu-Shirane volcano (Honshu, Japan): activity remains elevated

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the activity of the volcano continues at moderately high levels.

Seismicity remained elevated since September 2019. The seismic station recorded 6 volcano-tectonic earthquakes.
An eruption can occur approx. 1 km from the crater.
No significant change in the fumarolic plumes was observed.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 1 km distance from the Yugama crater.

JMA reported that during 8-15 August volcanic earthquakes continued at Kusatsu-Shiranesan's crater, although they had decreased from early August and tremor was absent. The Alert Level remains at 2 (on a scale of 1-5). Read all
