Aerial view of Vulcano Island. The left older part of the island is an older caldera - the remnant of a dissected stratovolcano, the right part is a younger caldera where the present-day harbour and tourist village of Vulcano is located next to the active cone (light brown) La Fossa. A narrow land bridge connects the island with the peninsula formed by the little cone Vulcanello (an island, that appeared in Roman times), mostly out of the right frame in this picture. Agios Nikolaos chapel on Palea Kameni island, one of the two historic volcanic islands in the center of the Santorini caldera (Greece). The sea around the island with its small bays is a popular destination for boat cruises - swimmers enjoy the warm waters of the red iron bay.
The orange stain of the rocks on the shore is the result of iron oxide deposit from an active hydrothermal vent system at the shallow sea floor around the Kameni islands. It releases heated, iron-rich waters and deposits a layer of iron-mud on the sea floor. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)

Sakurajima, Japan, July 2013: The largest explosion observed from close occurred at 23h33 (14:33 UTC) - although the eruption was not mentioned in Tokyo's VVAC, the ash plume was the at least as large as the larger ones previously observed. The eruption lasted more than 2 minutes, starting with an initial explosion and continuous lava and ash fountains afterwards. The plume darkened the sky of the whole eastern area for the rest of the night. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
