Plaster casts of the hollows left by bodies of victims found in place in the ruins. When Vesuivus erupted in 79 AD, many inhabitants took a fatal decision to stay in the city, trying to cope with the initial constant fall of pumice. When the first pyroclastic flows invaded the city, the remaining survivors were killed, probably more or less instantly. Their bodies were incorporated into the thick ash and pumice deposits and left hollows when the organic material decomposed away. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
