Rurutu is an eroded shield volcano in the Astral (Tubuai) Islands capped by later Pleistocene lava flows that reached the sea through gaps in the fringing coral reef. The younger volcanics are Potassium-Argon dated from 1.85-1.05 million years ago (Duncan and Mcdougall 1976).---
