San Cristobal volcano (Nicaragua): small ash emissions on 20 July
Monday Jul 21, 2014 11:05 AM | AUTEUR : T
A series of small explosive eruptions took place at the volcano this Sunday (20 Jul).
A first explosion occurred at 13:30 local time and was followed by a second one at 14:13. Both produced only small plumes of ash that rose approx. 100 m.
Ash falls were noted in downwind areas up to 18 km distance, including sections of the Pan American Highway, where the dusty ash caused visibility problems.
Authorities activated an emergency system as precaution. It includes that people living in the areas closest to the volcano should be preparing themselves for a possible evacuation in case the eruptive activity becomes stronger.
Sunday's ash emissions were the 3rd time such activity occurred this year, after similar events on 4 February and 7 June.
