Gas plume with diffuse ash from San Miguel volcano last week
During the past 2 weeks, the activity at the volcano has been increasing. Visibly, the volcano has been emitting a diffuse gas plume, sometimes containing some ash.
Nr of daily earthquakes under the volcano (image: MARN)
Since 22 May, MARN reports that there has been a significant increase in the number of earthquakes under the summit crater, with predominance of low and high frequency shallow earthquakes located mostly under the active crater. Earthquakes were mostly at magnitudes less than 1.5 and cannot be felt by people.
MARN interprets them as related to sudden and periodic pressure changes in the fluids of the shallow hydrothermal system. This increases the possibility of new ash emissions similar to the sporadic activity observed in recent years. It is less likely (but not impossible) that there is new lava arriving in the summit crater, which could lead up to a potentially more intense eruptive phase.
