Santorini is in the headlines again, some of course saying that scientists detected evidence that Santorini is going to erupt soon.
Although it is not really that much news any more, as similar studies have been presented earlier this year, the new study, published in the Nature Geoscience journal, presents new and more precise data and analysis of recent deformation measurements of the Santorini volcano during 2011-early 2012.
Following swarms of earthquakes in early 2011, Santorini began to inflate by about 14 centimeters, the most significant change since 1955, shortly after the last eruption in 1950.
Michelle Parks from Oxford University's Department of Earth Sciences describes her visits to Santorini in 2011:

The tour guides, who visit the volcano several times a day, would update me on changes in the amount of strong smelling gas being released from the summit, or changes in the color of the water in some of the bays around the islands. On one particular day in April 2011, two guides told me they had felt an earthquake while they were on the volcano and that the motion of the ground had actually made them jump. Locals working in restaurants on the main island of Thera became aware of the increase in earthquake activity due to the vibration and clinking of glasses in their bars.

Deformation was measured using high-recision GPS and satellite radar images at a precision of millimeters of movements of the earth's surface.

The study suggests that the inflation was caused by a magma intrusion between January 2011 and April 2012, and the volume of new magma that has accumulated beneath Santorini was estimated somewhere between 10 and 20 million cubic meters, about half the volume typically erupted during the latest eruptions in the 19th and 20th century.

A new study was published about the recent uplift detected on the volcanic island of Nea Kameni in the center of the Santorini caldera. The data were obtained using ESA's Envisat satellite and the measurements show that the northeastern part of Nea Kameni experienced an uplift of about 5 cm in 2011, while other areas of the volcano rose some 3–4 cm. This inflation was associated with the elevated seismic activity during the past months and can be interpreted caused by the injection of fresh magma under the the volcano. ... lire toutes
