Significant 6.0 quake hits near Nukalofa, Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, Tonga
6.0 quake 19 Apr 5:33 pm (GMT +13)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 6.0 quake in Tonga near Nukalofa, Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, only 20 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022, at 5:33 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.9. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In 'Ohonua (pop. 1,200) located 88 km from the epicenter, Kolonga (pop. 1,100) 101 km away, Lapaha (pop. 8,000) 106 km away, Nukalofa (pop. 22,400) 115 km away, Nuku'alofa (pop. 22,400) 115 km away, and Haveluloto (pop. 3,400) 116 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online
or via our mobile app
