Significant 5.1 quake hits near San Jose, Mindoro Occidental, Mimaropa, Philippines5.1 quake 5 Feb 7:49 am (GMT +8)
A shallow magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported in the morning near San Jose, Mindoro Occidental, Mimaropa, Philippines.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday 5 February 2021 at 7:49 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Caminauit (pop. 11,200) located 51 km from the epicenter, San Jose (pop. 118,800) 52 km away, Magsaysay (pop. 9,400) 56 km away, Calintaan (pop. 11,500) 67 km away, Mansalay (pop. 23,000) 94 km away, and Sablayan (pop. 38,400) 94 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro / Weak shaking (MMI III) / 2-5 s : I thought it was because I felt dizzy this morning. Then I ask my friend if she felt the earthquake then she says she does not. So I disregard what I've felt and this afternoon I tried to google it if on that certain time occurs an earthquake. I did not panicked though because I'm the only one who felt it. | One user found this interesting.
