Significant 5.0 quake hits near Wé, Lifou, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia5.0 quake 11 Feb 12:24 pm (GMT +11)
A shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported around noon near Wé, Lifou, Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday 11 February 2021 at 12:24 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Wé (pop. 10,400) located 22 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fayaoué (pop. 4,400) located 82 km from the epicenter, and Tadine (pop. 7,500) 109 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
