3.7 quake 14 Mar 8:59 pm (GMT -10)
A very shallow magnitude 3.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 8:59 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) located 7 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Fern Acres (pop. 1,500) located 15 miles from the epicenter, Mountain View (pop. 3,900) 16 miles away, Ainaloa (pop. 3,000) 19 miles away, Orchidlands Estates (pop. 2,800) 20 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 23 miles away, Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300) 24 miles away, and Hilo (pop. 43,300) 28 miles away.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
