A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Crucecita, Santa María Huatulco, Oaxaca, Mexico, was reported only 25 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 13 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday 3 April 2021 at 11:59 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Estacahuite (pop. 320) located 40 km from the epicenter, Puerto Angel (pop. 2,600) 40 km away, San Pedro Pochutla (pop. 13,700) 47 km away, San Miguel Figueroa (pop. 1,100) 51 km away, Crucecita (pop. 15,100) 55 km away, and Huatulco (pop. 7,400) 56 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Brisas de Zicatela (pop. 9,800) located 91 km from the epicenter, and Puerto Escondido (pop. 25,900) 97 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
