Just 8 minutes ago, a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck near El Centro, Imperial County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 8:52 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 8.7 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Holtville (pop. 6,400) located 4 miles from the epicenter, Heber (pop. 4,300) 7 miles away, El Centro (pop. 44,000) 8 miles away, Calexico (pop. 40,100) 8 miles away, Imperial (pop. 17,100) 9 miles away, and Mexicali (pop. 689,800) 11 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Isabel (pop. 29,300) located 13 miles from the epicenter, Brawley (pop. 25,900) 15 miles away, and Puebla (pop. 15,200) 15 miles away.
