A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Puerto Francisco de Orellana, Provincia de Francisco de Orellana, Ecuador, was reported 31 minutes ago by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 1 km beneath the epicenter around noon on Monday 19 April 2021 at 12:13 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Boca Suno (pop. 20,300) located 43 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Archidona (pop. 7,300) located 54 km from the epicenter, Puerto Francisco de Orellana (pop. 48,100) 57 km away, Nueva Loja (pop. 24,200) 96 km away, and Cayambe (pop. 26,600) 97 km away.
