4.2 quake 5 May 2:02 am (GMT -5)
A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Playas, Provincia del Guayas, Ecuador, was reported only 24 minutes ago by the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 14 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Wednesday 5 May 2021 at 2:02 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Playas (pop. 30,600) located 15 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include La Libertad (pop. 75,900) located 60 km from the epicenter, Salinas (pop. 43,900) 65 km away, Guayaquil (pop. 1,952,000) 72 km away, Duran (pop. 167,800) 76 km away, Pedro Carbo (pop. 23,400) 81 km away, El Triunfo (pop. 32,300) 84 km away, Naranjal (pop. 32,000) 94 km away, and Machala (pop. 198,100) 99 km away.
