An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 23 minutes ago 16 km northeast of Ormoc City, Philippines, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 12 km beneath the epicenter near Ormoc City, Leyte, Eastern Visayas, Philippines, early evening on Friday 28 May 2021 at 6:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Canhandugan (pop. 2,100) located 10 km from the epicenter, Ormoc City (pop. 191,200) 16 km away, Carigara (pop. 17,500) 29 km away, Palo (pop. 17,500) 29 km away, Tanauan (pop. 16,600) 30 km away, Tacloban City (pop. 242,100) 35 km away, Panalanoy (pop. 189,100) 36 km away, and Baybay City (pop. 17,700) 42 km away.
