4.6 quake 23 km east of Patras, Achaea, West Greece, 3 Jun 6:06 pm (GMT +3)
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Patras, Achaea, West Greece, Greece, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Greece. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 27 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Thursday 3 June 2021 at 6:06 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Krini (pop. 290) located 3 km from the epicenter, Aigio (pop. 20,400) 13 km away, Patras (pop. 168,000) 23 km away, Naupacte (pop. 13,400) 28 km away, and Amaliada (pop. 16,800) 68 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Agrinio (pop. 46,900) located 71 km from the epicenter, Pýrgos (pop. 22,400) 72 km away, Tripoli (pop. 26,600) 81 km away, and Lamia (pop. 52,000) 91 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
