4.7 quake 39 km west of Tianpeng, Sichuan, China, 14 Jul 11:36 pm (GMT +8)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in China near Tianpeng, Sichuan, only 15 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Wednesday 14 July 2021 at 11:36 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tianpeng (pop. 60,800) located 39 km from the epicenter, Chengdu (pop. 7,415,600) 67 km away, Linqiong (pop. 55,600) 73 km away, and Deyang (pop. 152,200) 80 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mianyang (pop. 264,100) located 117 km from the epicenter.
