An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 15 minutes ago 70 km northeast of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km beneath the epicenter near Huehuetenango, Municipio de Huehuetenango, Departamento de Huehuetenango, Guatemala, late at night on Saturday 17 July 2021 at 10:33 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In San Luis Ixcan (pop. 7,900) located 15 km from the epicenter, Barillas (pop. 14,100) 17 km away, and San Mateo Ixtatan (pop. 13,200) 31 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Nebaj (pop. 23,300) located 54 km from the epicenter, Jacaltenango (pop. 34,100) 61 km away, Huehuetenango (pop. 79,400) 70 km away, Momostenango (pop. 31,700) 97 km away, and Coban (pop. 53,400) 99 km away.
