Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 34 km northeast of Al Hoceima, Morocco in the morning
4.2 quake 30 Jul 11:13 am (GMT +2)
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Morocco near Al Hoceima, Al-Hoceima, Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, only 17 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday 30 July 2021 at 11:13 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Al Hoceima (pop. 395,600) located 34 km from the epicenter, Tirhanimîne (pop. 55,800) 36 km away, and Imzouren (pop. 40,000) 40 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bni Bouayach (pop. 18,300) located 44 km from the epicenter, Midar (pop. 10,200) 63 km away, Nador (pop. 129,300) 79 km away, and Al Aaroui (pop. 36,000) 83 km away.
