Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Lamezia Terme, Provincia di Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy4.4 quake Italy: Tirreno Meridionale (MARE) 19 Aug 2021 6:30 am (GMT +1)
Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Italy near Lamezia Terme, Provincia di Catanzaro, Calabria, only 21 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday 19 August 2021 at 6:30 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 199.5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the United States Geological Survey at magnitude 4.8, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.6.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Villaggio del Golfo (pop. 11, 40 km away), Vibo Valentia (pop. 19,300, 52 km away), Sambiase (pop. 20,000, 55 km away), Lamezia Terme (pop. 70,500, 57 km away), Nicastro (pop. 40,000, 58 km away), Nicastro-Sambiase (pop. 55,700, 58 km away), Cosenza (pop. 63,900, 63 km away), Quattromiglia (pop. 22,900, 65 km away), and Gioia Tauro (pop. 18,800, 66 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
