An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 16 minutes ago 49 km southwest of Santa Tecla, El Salvador, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 75 km beneath the epicenter near Santa Tecla, La Libertad, El Salvador, in the morning on Saturday, September 18th, 2021, at 8:43 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Libertad (pop. 16,900) located 30 km from the epicenter, Acajutla (pop. 22,800) 43 km away, Santa Tecla (pop. 124,700) 49 km away, Antiguo Cuscatlan (pop. 33,800) 49 km away, San Salvador (pop. 526,000) 56 km away, Mexicanos (pop. 160,300) 59 km away, Soyapango (pop. 329,700) 61 km away, and Apopa (pop. 112,200) 67 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sensuntepeque (pop. 20,400) located 115 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
