4.2 quake 26 Sep 1:30 pm (GMT +8)
A very shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported around noon near Tagbilaran, Bohol, Central Visayas, Philippines.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday, September 26th, 2021, at 1:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Bagacay (pop. 2,200) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Loboc (pop. 16,300) located 25 km from the epicenter, and Tagbilaran (pop. 86,400) 28 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Talisay City (pop. 133,100) located 46 km from the epicenter, Carcar (pop. 40,700) 48 km away, Minglanilla (pop. 62,100) 48 km away, Siudad ti Lapu-Lapu (pop. 350,500) 50 km away, Cebu City (pop. 798,600) 52 km away, and Mandaue City (pop. 331,300) 52 km away.
