Just 9 minutes ago, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Friday, November 19th, 2021, at 3:27 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Athéras (pop. 170) located 3 km from the epicenter, Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 11 km away, Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 16 km away, Valsamata (pop. 1000) 22 km away, and Samos (pop. 1,300) 23 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
