Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 70 km southeast of Hachinohe, Japan late at night

5.0 quake 18 Mar 11:25 pm (GMT +9)
A moderately shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported late at night near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday, March 18th, 2022, at 11:25 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 53 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Miyako (pop. 51,700) located 61 km from the epicenter, Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) 70 km away, Ichinohe (pop. 15,800) 77 km away, Yamada (pop. 20,100) 80 km away, Misawa (pop. 42,800) 90 km away, Ōtsuchi (pop. 16,500) 92 km away, and Morioka (pop. 295,200) 102 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either
online or via
