The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Chile near Valparaiso, Provincia de Valparaíso, Region de Valparaiso, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022, at 6:59 am local time at a shallow depth of 20 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Ligua (pop. 24,900) located 56 km from the epicenter, Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 79 km away, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 85 km away, Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 87 km away, Viña del Mar (pop. 294,600) 88 km away, Quilpué (pop. 130,300) 93 km away, Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 95 km away, and Limache (pop. 35,900) 97 km away.
