Update Thu, 5 May 2022, 00:18Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 26 km east of Khorugh, Tajikistan
5.0 quake 5 May 5:05 am (GMT +5)
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Khorugh, Gorno-Badakhshan, Tajikistan, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 108 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, May 5th, 2022, at 5:05 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.4.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Khorugh (pop. 30,000) located 26 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Khandūd (pop. 5,500) located 73 km from the epicenter, Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000) 88 km away, Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100) 94 km away, and Faizabad (pop. 44,400) 120 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online
