Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Ise, Ise-shi, Mie, Japan
![5.1 quake 9 May 5:33 pm (GMT +9)]()
5.1 quake 9 May 5:33 pm (GMT +9)
Japan was shaken near Ise, Ise-shi, Mie, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 15 minutes ago, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake reported.
The quake hit at a great depth of 328 km beneath the epicenter near Ise, Ise-shi, Mie, Japan, in the afternoon on Monday, May 9th, 2022, at 5:33 pm local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), which listed it as a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Toba (pop. 23,300) located 11 km from the epicenter, Ise (pop. 97,300) 24 km away, Tahara (pop. 38,200) 35 km away, Nishio (pop. 103,300) 44 km away, Hekinan (pop. 68,900) 45 km away, Handa (pop. 116,100) 45 km away, and Gamagōri (pop. 80,800) 47 km away.
