Moderate 4.5 quake hits near Chabahar, Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran4.5 quake 3 Jun 12:03 am (GMT +4:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 14 minutes ago 36 km southeast of Chabahar, Iran, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Chabahar, Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran, late at night on Thursday, June 2nd, 2022, at 11:33 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chabahar (pop. 47,300) located 36 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jiwani (pop. 16,300) located 88 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
