Significant magnitude 5.1 quake hits 71 km east of Ishinomaki, Japan early morning 5.1 quake 28 Jun 5:03 am (GMT +9)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred early morning on Tuesday, June 28th, 2022, at 5:03 am local time near Ishinomaki, Ishinomaki Shi, Honshu-miyagi-ken, Japan, as reported by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 38 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200) located 71 km from the epicenter, Ofunato (pop. 35,400) 77 km away, Yamoto (pop. 32,000) 79 km away, Wakuya (pop. 18,300) 86 km away, Kogota (pop. 19,800) 93 km away, Kamaishi (pop. 43,100) 94 km away, Schiogama (pop. 59,500) 96 km away, Ichinoseki (pop. 63,000) 99 km away, and Sendai (pop. 1,063,100) 111 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
