The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Panama near Las Tablas, Distrito de Las Tablas, Provincia de Los Santos, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday, June 28th, 2022, at 2:47 am local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Los Destiladeros (pop. 65) located 32 km from the epicenter, Pedasi (pop. 1,900) 41 km away, Tonosi (pop. 1,500) 48 km away, and Las Tablas (pop. 8,900) 70 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Juan Bautista (pop. 11,800) located 96 km from the epicenter, Chitre (pop. 9,000) 96 km away, Llano Bonito (pop. 9,700) 97 km away, La Arena (pop. 7,200) 98 km away, and Monagrillo (pop. 10,800) 99 km away.
