The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in the Philippines near Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, Caraga, only 24 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Thursday, June 30th, 2022, at 11:45 pm local time at a shallow depth of 16 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cagdianao (pop. 2,700) located 27 km from the epicenter, Dinagat (pop. 2,600) 29 km away, Loreto (pop. 5,400) 34 km away, Loreto (pop. 5,400) 34 km away, Loreto (pop. 5,400) 34 km away, Libas (pop. 3,400) 36 km away, and Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte (pop. 4,300) 37 km away.
