A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Sapporo, Sapporo-shi, Hokkaido, Japan, was reported only 13 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 137.3 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Thursday, July 14th, 2022, at 11:56 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sapporo (pop. 1,883,000) located 32 km from the epicenter, Kitahiroshima (pop. 62,400) 36 km away, Chitose (pop. 92,900) 38 km away, Tomakomai (pop. 174,800) 39 km away, Ebetsu (pop. 134,000) 45 km away, Otaru (pop. 143,800) 45 km away, Date (pop. 35,300) 46 km away, Ishikari (pop. 57,300) 50 km away, and Muroran (pop. 96,200) 57 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
