Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.3 just reported 28 km northeast of Patras, Greece

4.3 quake 29 Jul 4:44 pm (GMT +3)
4.3 quake 29 Jul 4:44 pm (GMT +3)
A very shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Patras, Achaea, Western Greece, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Friday, July 29th, 2022, at 4:44 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Glyfada (pop. 480) located 8 km from the epicenter, and Nafpaktos (pop. 13,400) 15 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rododafni (pop. 2,600) located 15 km from the epicenter, Aigio (pop. 20,400) 19 km away, Rio (pop. 4,700) 22 km away, Patras (pop. 168,000) 28 km away, and Amfissa (pop. 6,900) 36 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Agrinio (pop. 46,900) located 57 km from the epicenter, and Lamia (pop. 52,000) 67 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
