Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.2 just reported 36 km southwest of Hamamatsu, Japan

5.2 quake 25 Nov 4:04 pm (GMT +9)
5.2 quake 25 Nov 4:04 pm (GMT +9)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 14 minutes ago 36 km southwest of Hamamatsu, Japan, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a great depth of 339.2 km beneath the epicenter near Hamamatsu, Hamamatsu-shi, Prefectura de Shizuoka, Japan, in the afternoon on Friday, November 25th, 2022, at 4:04 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.7, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.3.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hamamatsu (pop. 605,100) located 36 km from the epicenter, Iwata (pop. 88,500) 41 km away, Tahara (pop. 38,200) 41 km away, Toyohashi-shi (pop. 378,400) 45 km away, Hamakita (pop. 86,500) 48 km away, Toyokawa (pop. 120,500) 49 km away, Fukuroi (pop. 63,000) 49 km away, and Shizuoka (pop. 701,600) 98 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
