Significant earthquake of magnitude 6.4 just reported 10 km northwest of Sivrice, Turkey

Turkey was shaken near Sivrice, Elazığ, by an earthquake of magnitude 6.4 only 11 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.

The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Sivrice, Elazığ, Turkey, in the morning on Sunday 27 December 2020 at 9:37 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Çüngüş (pop. 5,100) located 30 km from the epicenter, Baskil (pop. 15,900) 35 km away, Çermik (pop. 21,000) 43 km away, Ergani (pop. 52,700) 53 km away, and Kovancılar (pop. 23,000) 64 km away.
In Diyarbakır (pop. 644,800) located 108 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
