The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.2 quake in Argentina near Chilecito, Departamento de Chilecito, La Rioja, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Wednesday 13 January 2021 at 8:36 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 150 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by INPRES, which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Chilecito (pop. 42,200, 16 km away), Villa Bustos (pop. 2,200, 64 km away), Vinchina (pop. 2,800, 67 km away), and La Rioja (pop. 162,600, 84 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
