A shallow magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported in the evening near San Antonio, San Antonio Province, Region de Valparaiso, Chile.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday 21 April 2021 at 8:17 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Los Navegantes (pop. 230) located 56 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Antonio (pop. 85,700) located 77 km from the epicenter, Cartagena (pop. 16,900) 80 km away, Melipilla (pop. 63,100) 106 km away, Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) 121 km away, Viña del Mar (pop. 294,600) 126 km away, and Quilpue (pop. 130,300) 130 km away.
