Magnitude 4.6 earthquake strikes near Huarmey, Provincia de Huarmey, Ancash, Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 21 minutes ago 64 km southwest of Huarmey, Peru, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.

The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 44 km beneath the epicenter near Huarmey, Provincia de Huarmey, Ancash, Peru, in the evening on Thursday 22 April 2021 at 8:20 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Huarmey (pop. 16,200) located 64 km from the epicenter, and Paramonga (pop. 27,600) 107 km away.
