Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 83 km northeast of Kiunga, Papua New Guinea in the morning

Papua New Guinea was shaken near Kiunga, North Fly, Western Province, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 16 minutes ago, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Kiunga, North Fly, Western Province, Papua New Guinea, in the morning on Friday 7 May 2021 at 9:08 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Kiunga (pop. 11,500) located 83 km from the epicenter, and Tari (pop. 8,200) 119 km away.
