The event was filed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Patnongon (pop. 5,800) located 14 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Iloilo City (pop. 387,700) located 58 km from the epicenter, Passi (pop. 42,800) 60 km away, Kalibo Town (pop. 56,800) 88 km away, and Bago City (pop. 150,300) 92 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Talisay (pop. 65,300) located 97 km from the epicenter, Bacolod City (pop. 454,900) 97 km away, Binonga (pop. 84,000) 97 km away, and Roxas (pop. 102,700) 99 km away.
