Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 52 km southeast of Benkulu, Indonesia in the evening

A moderately shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported in the evening near Benkulu, Bengkulu, Indonesia.

According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Tuesday 15 June 2021 at 9:16 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 33 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Benkulu (pop. 309,700) located 52 km from the epicenter, and Curup (pop. 46,200) 88 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pagar Alam (pop. 70,400) located 97 km from the epicenter, and Lubuklinggau (pop. 148,200) 118 km away.
