A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Dayr az Zawr, Deir ez-Zor, Syria, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Monday 19 July 2021 at 1:09 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Dayr az Zawr (pop. 242,600) located 45 km from the epicenter, Nicephorium (pop. 177,600) 83 km away, Al Mayādīn (pop. 54,500) 85 km away, and Subaykhān (pop. 25,500) 107 km away.
