5.6 quake 29 Jul 3:09 pm (GMT +6:30)
Myanmar (Burma) was shaken near Shwebo, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 only 15 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Shwebo, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma), early afternoon on Thursday 29 July 2021 at 2:39 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.4, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.4.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Shwebo (pop. 88,900) located 43 km from the epicenter, and Mogok (pop. 90,800) 61 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) located 104 km from the epicenter, Pyin Oo Lwin (pop. 117,300) 111 km away, Sagaing (pop. 78,700) 114 km away, and Monywa (pop. 182,000) 119 km away.
