An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred around noon on Friday 30 July 2021 at 1:05 pm local time near Hachinohe, Hachinohe Shi, Aomori, Japan, as reported by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 28.9 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Miyako (pop. 51,700) located 70 km from the epicenter, and Yamada (pop. 20,100) 86 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hachinohe (pop. 239,000) located 92 km from the epicenter, Ōtsuchi (pop. 16,500) 98 km away, and Kamaishi (pop. 43,100) 108 km away.
