Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) located 38 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Viña del Mar (pop. 294,600) located 39 km from the epicenter, Quilpue (pop. 130,300) 46 km away, Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 47 km away, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 48 km away, Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 49 km away, La Ligua (pop. 24,900) 53 km away, and Limache (pop. 35,900) 54 km away.
