Significant magnitude 5.0 earthquake 38 km northwest of Valparaiso, Chile

5.0 quake 31 Jul 8:14 am (GMT -4)

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Chile near Valparaiso, Provincia de Valparaíso, only 10 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday 31 July 2021 at 8:14 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Valparaiso (pop. 282,400) located 38 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Viña del Mar (pop. 294,600) located 39 km from the epicenter, Quilpue (pop. 130,300) 46 km away, Hacienda La Calera (pop. 49,100) 47 km away, Quillota (pop. 67,800) 48 km away, Villa Alemana (pop. 97,300) 49 km away, La Ligua (pop. 24,900) 53 km away, and Limache (pop. 35,900) 54 km away.
